Montana will issue marriage certificates to active-duty members of the U.S. Military who are unable to physically attend a marriage ceremony. Just because you have to wait to see your loved one, doesn't mean you should have to wait to be married.
We are proud to unite, in marriage, members of the Armed Forces that are unable to be together for their wedding. We are hopeful that these couples will have a celebration of their love with friends and family once they are safely back home. Although they are legally married via Double Proxy marriage, the wedding celebration can be traditional and fabulous.

Montana performs hundreds of Double Proxy Marriages to soldiers serving our country overseas and who are unable to be with their “bride/groom to be” to get married in a traditional manner. I wonderered how long this untraditional proxy marriage has been going on.
I am not certain of the first proxy but there is a famous one. One of the most famous proxy marriages was that of Emperor Napoleon and the marriage to Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria. This was the second marriage for Napoleon and took place 11 March 1810. It is said that Napoleon gave the reason of needing an heir as the primary expectation of the union. He seemed genuinely excited as he decided to lose some weight, he learned how to dance the waltz and had pictures portraying his victories over Austria removed from his palaces. The marriage took place in Vienna. She was not actually present at the wedding.
